  17. <p>     One day word has it that 80 Iraqi military officers were
  18. executed for attempting a coup. Another day the rumor is that
  19. 76 Iraqis and Egyptians were put to death for mounting an
  20. anti-Saddam demonstration south of Baghdad. Still another day
  21. brings the story that former Iraqi Prime Minister Saadoun
  22. Hammadi and 24 high-ranking army officers were shot for a coup
  23. attempt.

  25. <p>     Unconfirmable reports of roundups and executions,
  26. circulated by Iraqi opposition sources intent on destabilizing
  27. the regime, have reached such a pitch that it is tempting to
  28. conclude that Saddam Hussein is pressing the panic button. On
  29. the other hand, Hammadi resurfaced in the inner circle after his
  30. rumored death. As for Saddam, he continues his belligerent hate
  31. campaign. Last week he marked Army Day with a cheer for the Scud
  32. missiles that had "hit the cursed Israel" during last year's
  33. war.
